Meet Mark Alten, ABC Certified Dog Obedience Instructor
Hi my name is Mark Alten, I am the owner of Alten Dog Training.  I have been involved in some kind of animal training since I was 12 years old.  My two brothers and I are master falconers and have enjoyed training and hunting with hawks and falcons for many years.  Many falconers use dogs in the field and I was frequently drawn to why some dogs worked well and some didn't.  I later found out, it all had to do with the training the dog received as well as understanding and utilizing what the dog does naturally.  This led me to  researching dog training and eventually becoming certified through Animal Behavioral College. Helping people provide their dogs with the proper training so they can become loved and loyal family members for years to come, is what Alten Dog Training is all about.

Alten Dog Training offers, in-home personal training consisting of:
  • Puppy kindergarten,
  • Basic obedience on leash,
  • Advanced training off leash,
  • Behavior modification
  • Coming soon, group classes, dog walking services

We also work with shelter dogs helping them to adjust to their new homes.  Please feel free to call us anytime with any questions or inquiries.

Reasons for using a Professional Dog Obedience Instructor...
Benefits to owners and dogs:
  • They have an understanding of dog breed characteristics, developmental periods, proper socialization, basic health routines, disease prevention and canine communication.
  • With a clear understanding of normal canine behavior, we can help you understand the difference between normal canine behavior occurring at inconvenient or inappropriate times and abnormal canine behavior.
  • They have a strong understanding of the scientific principles of how animals learn that enables owners and pets to overcome past difficulties and prevent future problems.
  • The knowledge they have about training tools will often expedite the training process, these include; clickers, collars, leashes, housetraining aids, chewing deterrents, interactive toys, and safety equipment.
  • They understand the differences between obedience training, behavior modification and problem solving when training owners and dogs.
  • They know how to effectively treat the most common behavioral problems in dogs, e.g. housebreaking, house manners, puppy nipping, chewing, digging, jumping, excessive barking, and begging.
  • They know how to recognize the precursors of dog aggression, how to avoid it, and handle such aggression while training your dog.
  • Their bias is towards positive motivation when teaching obedience cues such as... sit, stay, down, come, heel, loose leash walking, leave it, and fetch.
Best of all, you and your dog will learn how to communicate and become the happy "family" everyone wants!

Training Tips:

Watch here for new tips every month.

  • In dog training, it is critical to be consistent, When your dog is in training, Try to do things the same way every time this will help keep the dog from getting confused. Consult your dog trainer if you feel you are being consistent but the dog is not responding positively to your efforts.
  •  Remember Exercise, Discipline, then love. If your dog isn't getting enough of the proper excercise they will most likely act out in other ways.( digging, chewing, excessive barking, ect... What do I mean by proper excercise, A good 30 minute walk twice a day is a good starting point for most medium to large dogs.( small dogs may not need as much depending on the breed) Dogs are pack animals besides excercise they need mental stimulation, they need to travel from point "A" to Point "B", letting the dog run around the back yard is not going to achieve this.
